Brian Fenton, a seven-time All-Ireland winner, fears that Ger Brennan's 12-week sideline ban could be a significant distraction for Dublin's championship campaign. Brennan, a key figure in the team, was given a red card for physical interference with a Galway backroom member, leading to a 12-week suspension. This ban will keep him off the sidelines for Dublin's Leinster Championship opener against Wicklow, and he is also prohibited from any matchday activity.
Fenton believes that Brennan's absence could be detrimental during a challenging period for the team. He states, 'If Ger was there coaching, I think they'd be all in. But I think just with the suspension and half in half out of training and potentially no communication with the players and stuff, that doesn't serve anything but a distraction for the team.'
The Dubs' relegation from Division 1 of the Allianz Football League and the subsequent player turnover have added to the team's challenges. Fenton acknowledges that the drop to Division 2 could have its benefits, but he also highlights the difficulty of the upcoming season. He says, 'Division 2 next year is no easy task either. There are unbelievable teams down there and they'll find it very hard to come out of that.'
One area of concern for Fenton is the team's overreliance on Con O'Callaghan. He notes that while O'Callaghan is a star player, the team needs to develop other players to step up. Fenton says, 'There seemed to be an overreliance on Con when he was playing during the league [as well]. I think even for two pointers and stuff, I don't know if Dublin fully got their head around it.'
Despite the challenges, Fenton remains optimistic about Dublin's chances in the Leinster Championship. He believes that the team can still challenge if they address certain issues, such as the overreliance on O'Callaghan and the impact of Brennan's absence. Fenton concludes, 'You're looking for other players to step up. There is lots of experience there. Don't get me wrong, Con is really the spearhead of the team. Dublin need to have him fit and in form if they are going to even challenge for Leinster this year.'
