Kingsway Lounge Food Hygiene Report: Black Grease, Mold, and Cross-Contamination Risks (2026)

The recent food hygiene report for Kingsway Lounge, a one-star Indian restaurant in Warrington, has sparked a heated debate in the local community. The report, obtained through a Freedom of Information request, reveals a multitude of hygiene issues that have left residents and food enthusiasts alike concerned. The restaurant's rating of one star, the lowest possible, indicates a dire need for improvement.

One of the most alarming findings was the presence of black grease, mold, and dirt throughout the kitchen. Inspectors discovered a large amount of open food stored underneath the cooker, which was not adequately covered, posing a significant risk of cross-contamination. Rice was left out on the side for an extended period before being returned to the fridge, further compromising food safety. The situation was exacerbated by a large container of poppadoms being stored on a shelf, exposed to contamination from black debris found on the kitchen ceiling and air vent.

The hygiene issues extended to hand contact points, with a hand paper towel dispenser and electric socket found to be dirty. Large portions of meat were stored in plastic bags in both freezers, which were not food-grade and posed a risk of cross-contamination. Portions of fish, samosas, and meat lacked proper labeling with shelf-life dates, and a fridge was operating at an unsafe temperature of 15.6°C, far above the recommended 8°C.

The extraction canopy and filter were in dire need of cleaning, with a significant build-up of grease resulting in black grease deposits on the extraction unit and surrounding ceiling. Inspectors advised that the system required prompt attention to prevent further accumulation and potential fire hazards.

Chopping boards and food containers showed excessive signs of wear, with some plastic containers found chipped and misshapen. The seal of the freezer in the kitchen was dirty with food debris, and the ice-making machine was also found to be dirty around the tray. The tandoori wash hand basin had mold growth, and a green rice bucket in the storeroom was not clean.

The report also highlighted electrical issues, with the chest freezer wires having been improperly joined and exposed wiring in the cellar, posing a risk of electric shock and fire. These findings are particularly concerning, as they indicate a lack of proper maintenance and potential safety hazards.

In response to the report, a spokesperson for the restaurant acknowledged the issues and assured the public that changes have been made to improve standards. They stated that cooked rice and chicken are now safely refrigerated, regular temperature checks are performed, all open food and poppadoms are covered, the kitchen ceiling was cleaned and repainted, and hand contact points, towel dispensers, and a new freezer were installed.

However, the spokesperson's response has not satisfied everyone. Many residents and food enthusiasts argue that the issues revealed in the report are too severe to be addressed by simple cosmetic changes. They believe that the restaurant's low rating is a clear indication of deeper systemic problems that require more comprehensive attention.

The debate surrounding Kingsway Lounge's hygiene issues has sparked a broader conversation about food safety standards in the hospitality industry. It has raised questions about the effectiveness of current inspection systems and the responsibility of businesses to ensure the well-being of their customers. As the discussion continues, it is crucial to address the underlying issues and implement stricter regulations to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
