Former President Barack Obama has spoken out after a controversial AI-generated video—shared on Donald Trump’s social media account—depicted him and former First Lady Michelle Obama as monkeys. The post, which appeared on Trump’s Truth Social on February 5, sparked immediate outrage across the political spectrum. It was later deleted, with Trump’s team claiming the offensive clip had been uploaded by mistake. But was it really just an accident—or another signal of how far political civility has fallen?
In an interview released Saturday with political podcaster Brian Tyler Cohen, Obama addressed the incident indirectly but firmly. The former president lamented what he described as a shocking decline in basic respect and shame within public discourse. “There’s this sort of clown show happening on social media and television,” Obama commented, without mentioning Trump by name. “People who once cared about propriety and respect for the office seem to have lost any sense of it.”
Cohen, referencing the one-second segment at the end of a one-minute video filled with election conspiracy claims, noted how disturbing it was to see the first Black president and first lady portrayed in such a demeaning way. The moment quickly fueled discussions about racism, misinformation, and the growing use of AI to provoke outrage online. Even the White House seemed to stumble in its reaction—first dismissing criticism as “fake outrage,” then backtracking and blaming a staffer for the post’s publication.
Obama suggested that this kind of behavior—and the refusal of public figures to acknowledge fault—could eventually backfire politically. He predicted that American voters would have the final word, hinting that such tactics might hurt Trump’s Republican allies in upcoming elections. “Most Americans,” he said, “find this behavior deeply troubling.”
Trump, however, defended the overall message of the video, which alleged election fraud, though he insisted he never saw the offensive final seconds featuring the Obamas. And this is where the story gets complicated: Is it possible for a leader to distance himself from content shared under his own name?
