The Old Riverside House: A Historical Gem Revived and Reimagined
A Tale of Two Eras: Imagine a place that once bustled with activity during ancient dynasties, later becoming a pivotal site in revolutionary history, and then, for years, it lay forgotten. This is the story of the Old Riverside House, a hidden treasure along the Wuxi River in Zhejiang Province, China. But the plot twist? It's about to undergo a stunning transformation!
The Design Challenge: Ref Architects and 0.5m Studio embarked on a mission to breathe new life into this abandoned site, aiming to reconnect the village with its riverfront. The house, nestled between a plaza and the riverbank, had isolated the community from the water for far too long. The architects' vision was to bridge this gap, turning 'separation' into 'harmony'.
Site Specifics: Located in Wangcunkou Town, Suichang County, the site is a riverside plot with a unique descent towards a natural stone riverbank. While the village is riverside, residential buildings dominate the riverfront, limiting public access to the water. This renovation project aims to change that.
The Creative Process: With an area of 240 square meters, the architects had a clear goal for 2025: to create a public space that invites the community to engage with its historical roots and natural surroundings. By revitalizing the old house, they sought to provide an open, accessible waterfront area for all to enjoy.
